“Robert” Milton Ernest Rauschenberg was born on October 22, 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas.
He studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Acadèmie Julian in Paris and at the legendary Black Mountain College in North Carolina where many of America’s most forward thinking and visionary artists and thinkers, including Josef Albers (who was an early teacher of Rauschenberg’s) and Buckminster Fuller, were teaching. It was here in the hill-country of the South that Rauschenberg also developed a friendship with composer John Cage. Together they both experimented with developing “blank art”. “A canvas is never empty,” –Rauschenberg
This was the start of Rauschenberg’s fame as a modern innovator. After leaving the American South, Rauschenberg travelled to Europe. It is here that he first fell in love with Italy’s beauty. During his travels he developed a series of collages, assemblages and small boxes filled with found elements and he exhibited them in Roma and Firenze.
ESPERTO (“Expert” in Italian) celebrates artistic expression and innovation in winemaking. Winemaking, as a form of art, is epitomized within these singular wines.
ESPERTO is produced from grapes grown in vineyards within the delle Venezie, renown as the ideal region for Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The vineyards, surrounded by the spectacularly picturesque beauty of the Dolomite Alps, share a microclimate and terroir well-suited to the production of high quality Pinot Grigio grapes.
The ESPERTO label was designed by artist, Robert Rauschenberg, one of the most important and innovative artists of our time. Rauschenberg has produced a label that perfectly embodies the essence of his art with the soul of this delightful wine. His unmistakable “brush-stroke” photographs combined with his unique sense of composition and dynamics create a mix of pure form and substance.
